WHAT IS A PROMPT FRAMEWORK?

A prompt framework is a template structure that reliably produces good output for a category of tasks. Instead of starting from scratch every time, you fill in the blanks. These 8 frameworks cover 90% of what most people use ChatGPT for.

FRAMEWORK 1: THE ROLE + TASK FRAMEWORK

Structure: "You are a [ROLE]. [TASK]."

When to use: Any time you want expert-level output in a specific domain.

Template: "You are a [EXPERT ROLE] with [X] years of experience in [AREA]. Your task is to [SPECIFIC TASK]. The output should be [FORMAT]. Consider [IMPORTANT CONSTRAINTS]."

Example: "You are a direct-response copywriter with 20 years of experience writing for e-commerce brands. Your task is to write a product description for a premium coffee grinder targeting home baristas. The output should be 100 words with a strong opening line and a clear benefit statement."

FRAMEWORK 2: THE CONTEXT + PROBLEM + REQUEST FRAMEWORK (CPR)

Structure: Context → Problem → Request

When to use: Complex tasks where background matters.

Template: "Context: [WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU'RE WORKING ON, RELEVANT BACKGROUND] Problem: [WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO SOLVE OR ACHIEVE] Request: [EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT, WITH FORMAT AND LENGTH]"

FRAMEWORK 3: THE BEFORE/AFTER/BRIDGE FRAMEWORK

Structure: Where I am → Where I want to be → Bridge me there.

When to use: Planning, learning paths, career advice, strategy.

Template: "Before: [CURRENT SITUATION — be specific about where you are now] After: [DESIRED OUTCOME — be specific about what success looks like] Bridge: Create a [TIMEFRAME] plan to get from Before to After. Be specific about what I should do each [WEEK/MONTH/STEP]."

FRAMEWORK 4: THE CRITIC FRAMEWORK

Structure: Produce output → then attack it.

When to use: Making your own work better. Decisions. Plans. Strategies.

Template: "Part 1: [YOUR REQUEST FOR CONTENT, PLAN, OR IDEA] Part 2: Now take the role of a harsh, experienced critic. Point out every weakness, gap, assumption, and risk in what you just produced. Don't soften the critique."

This two-step prompt forces better initial output AND gives you a genuine challenge to improve it.

FRAMEWORK 5: THE COMPARISON FRAMEWORK

Structure: Option A vs Option B → recommendation.

When to use: Decisions, product comparisons, strategy choices.

Template: "Compare [OPTION A] and [OPTION B] for someone who [DESCRIBE YOUR SITUATION]. For each option: key advantages, key disadvantages, best use cases, and worst use cases. End with a clear recommendation and reasoning. Avoid being neutral — make a call."

FRAMEWORK 6: THE STEPWISE FRAMEWORK

Structure: Break it down → build it up.

When to use: Complex tasks where you need the process, not just the output.

Template: "Walk me through how to [TASK] step by step. Before giving me steps, explain: what I need before I start, what the common mistakes are, and what good results look like. Then give me numbered steps with enough detail that I can actually follow them."

FRAMEWORK 7: THE PERSONA AUDIENCE FRAMEWORK

Structure: Write for a specific person, not a general audience.

When to use: Any writing where the audience matters (always).

Template: "Write [CONTENT TYPE] about [TOPIC] for [SPECIFIC PERSON DESCRIPTION]. This person: [DESCRIBE THEIR KNOWLEDGE LEVEL, WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT, WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO SOLVE]. Do not mention things they already know. Focus on what would genuinely help them."

FRAMEWORK 8: THE ITERATE FRAMEWORK

Structure: Draft → Critique → Revise → Finalise.

When to use: Any high-stakes writing (proposals, emails, presentations).

Step 1: "Write a first draft of [CONTENT]. Don't aim for perfection." Step 2: "List the 3 biggest weaknesses in this draft and how to fix them." Step 3: "Rewrite the draft incorporating these improvements: [PASTE WEAKNESSES]." Step 4: "Final pass: fix any remaining awkward sentences and make the opening stronger."

Four prompts. One polished piece. Better than most people produce in hours of manual editing.

HOW TO COMBINE FRAMEWORKS

Frameworks stack. A powerful combo: Role Framework + Stepwise Framework + Iterate Framework:

  1. Set the role
  2. Ask for a step-by-step approach
  3. Iterate until it's right
