THE WRITING STACK
For any piece of writing, use these tools in order:
- ChatGPT or Claude — Ideation, outlining, first drafts
- Hemingway Editor (free) — Simplify sentences, fix passive voice
- Grammarly (free) — Grammar and tone check
- Your own eyes — Final review. AI misses context you'll catch.
PHASE 1: BEAT THE BLANK PAGE
When you don't know where to start:
"I need to write [CONTENT TYPE] about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]. I'm stuck. Give me 5 different angles I could take, from straightforward to unexpected. For each angle, write the first sentence."
"Brainstorm 10 different ways to open a [ARTICLE/EMAIL/POST] about [TOPIC]. Include: a statistic, a question, a story, a bold claim, and a counterintuitive statement."
"I want to write about [TOPIC]. What's the most interesting or surprising aspect of this topic that most people don't know?"
PHASE 2: BUILD THE STRUCTURE
Before drafting, outline:
"Create a detailed outline for a [LENGTH] [CONTENT TYPE] about [TOPIC]. The reader is [DESCRIBE READER]. They want to achieve [GOAL]. Include: hook strategy, main sections with sub-points, and a closing that drives [ACTION]."
For articles specifically: "Using the AIDA framework (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action), outline a [LENGTH] article about [TOPIC] for [AUDIENCE]."
PHASE 3: WRITE THE FIRST DRAFT
The fastest way to draft:
"Write a rough first draft of [CONTENT TYPE] based on this outline: [PASTE OUTLINE]. Don't worry about perfection — I'll edit it. Focus on getting the ideas on the page."
Or section by section: "Write the introduction for an article with this outline: [PASTE]. The tone should be [TONE]. Length: [LENGTH]."
PHASE 4: EDIT AND IMPROVE
After you have a draft, use these editing prompts:
Tighten it: "Cut 30% of the words from this paragraph without losing any important meaning: [PASTE]"
Fix the opening: "Rewrite just the first paragraph of this piece to be more engaging. The current version: [PASTE]"
Improve flow: "Rewrite this section so the ideas connect more naturally. Each paragraph should lead into the next: [PASTE]"
Vary sentence length: "This writing uses too many sentences of the same length. Rewrite it with varied sentence structure: [PASTE]"
Strengthen the ending: "Rewrite the conclusion of this piece. It should leave the reader with a clear takeaway and a reason to act: [PASTE]"
PHASE 5: TONE AND VOICE
Match any writing style: "Analyse the writing style in this example: [PASTE EXAMPLE]. Then rewrite this draft [PASTE DRAFT] to match that style closely."
Sound less like AI: "Rewrite this so it sounds like a real person wrote it. Add one specific anecdote or example. Remove any generic phrases. Make the opening bolder: [PASTE]"
QUICK TEMPLATES
Blog post intro: "Write a 100-word introduction for a blog post titled '[TITLE]'. Open with a surprising fact or question. Make the reader feel understood."
Email subject line: "Write 10 subject lines for an email about [TOPIC]. Mix: curiosity, benefit, number, question, and urgency styles."
LinkedIn post: "Write a LinkedIn post about [TOPIC/EXPERIENCE]. Open with a single bold sentence. Use short paragraphs. End with a question to drive comments. 150-200 words."
Product description: "Write a product description for [PRODUCT]. Lead with the main benefit. Use sensory language. Address the top objection buyers have. End with a CTA. 100 words."
